Lesser palatine foramina

Foramina palatina minora

Lesser palatine foramina (foramina palatina minora) are bony openings located in the area of the pyramidal process of the palatine bone. The lesser palatine vessels and nerves pass through them. The lesser palatine foramina are connected to the lesser palatine canals, which communicate with the greater palatine canal.

Where are the lesser palatine foramina located?

The lesser palatine foramina are located within the structures of the palatine bone (os palatinum). This paired bone is closely connected with the maxilla, sphenoid bone, and the walls of the nasal cavity.

Topographically, the openings are connected to the perpendicular plate (lamina perpendicularis) of the palatine bone. Posteroinferiorly, this plate continues into the pyramidal process (processus pyramidalis), which completes the pterygoid fossa (fossa pterygoidea) between the plates of the pterygoid process of the sphenoid bone. In the region of the pyramidal process, the lesser palatine foramina (foramina palatina minora) and lesser palatine canals (canales palatini minores) are visible.

Connection with the canal system

The lesser palatine foramina are connected to the lesser palatine canals (canales palatini minores).

The lesser palatine canals communicate with the greater palatine canal (canalis palatinus major). The greater palatine canal is formed by the apposition of the greater palatine groove (sulcus palatinus major) on the maxillary surface of the perpendicular plate of the palatine bone with the maxillary groove.

What passes through the lesser palatine foramina?

The following pass through the lesser palatine foramina:

  • Lesser palatine arteries — aa. palatini minores.
  • Lesser palatine veins — vv. palatini minores.
  • Lesser palatine nerves — nn. palatini minores.

In the oral cavity study notes, the lesser palatine foramina are specified as: lesser palatine vessels and nerves — Aa., Vv., Nn. palatini minores.

Topography and adjacent structures

To understand the location of the lesser palatine foramina, adjacent anatomical structures are important:

  • Greater palatine foramen (foramen palatinum majus) — transmits the greater palatine vessels and nerve: A., V., Nn. palatini majores.
  • Horizontal plate of the palatine bone (lamina horizontalis) — completes the hard palate posteriorly.
  • Pterygopalatine fossa (fossa pterygopalatina) — its medial wall is formed by the perpendicular plate of the palatine bone, which participates in the formation of the greater palatine canal.
  • Incisive foramina (foramina incisiva) — transmit the nasopalatine nerve (n. nasopalatinus) from the nasal cavity to the hard palate.

Features of Latin terminology

In anatomical nomenclature, doubling the initial letter of an abbreviation indicates the plural form.

For the word foramina ("openings"), the abbreviation Forr. is used. Therefore, the term "lesser palatine foramina" can be written as forr. palatina minora.

Class and exam questions

In which bone are the lesser palatine foramina located?

They are located in the palatine bone (os palatinum), in the region of its pyramidal process.

Which nerves and vessels emerge through these openings?

They transmit the lesser palatine vessels and nerves: Aa., Vv., Nn. palatini minores.

Which canal are the lesser palatine foramina connected to?

The lesser palatine foramina are connected to the lesser palatine canals (canales palatini minores), which communicate with the greater palatine canal (canalis palatinus major).

How to properly abbreviate the term in Latin?

Since foramina is plural, the initial letter of the abbreviation is doubled: forr. palatina minora.
