Stachybotryotoxicosis

Stachybotryotoxicosis

Stachybotryotoxicosis is a severe disease caused by toxins of the mold fungus Stachybotrys alternans. The condition is of major veterinary importance and also poses a serious hazard to humans upon contact with contaminated materials or when staying in indoor environments affected by the fungus.

Causative agentMold fungus Stachybotrys alternans
At-risk groupHorses (severe course), less commonly cattle and poultry
Inhalation routeDevelopment of pneumoconiosis and sick building syndrome
Contact routeOccurrence of dermatitis in humans

Etiology and veterinary significance

The only proven etiological factor of the disease is the mold fungus _Stachybotrys alternans_. This microorganism is capable of producing highly active toxins, which determine the clinical picture of the poisoning.

From the perspective of veterinary medicine and epidemiology, stachybotryotoxicosis causes significant damage to farm animals.

  • Horses: constitute the primary risk group. In them, the disease takes the most severe form.
  • Cattle and poultry: are affected less frequently, but are also susceptible to the toxic effect.

The main route of transmission in veterinary medicine is alimentary. Animals receive a massive dose of the toxin when fed fodder contaminated with the fungus Stachybotrys alternans.

Pathogenesis in humans

Humans are also susceptible to the effects of Stachybotrys alternans toxins. Depending on the mechanism of interaction with the pathogen, there are two main pathways of disease development and, accordingly, two forms of the pathology:

  1. Contact route. Occurs upon direct contact of human skin and mucous membranes with contaminated agricultural feed. The toxins exert a local irritant and damaging effect, which clinically manifests as the development of dermatitis.
  2. Inhalation route. Associated with the inhalation of particles containing fungal elements. The entry of spores and toxins into the respiratory tract leads to damage to the lung tissue and the development of pneumoconiosis.

Sick building syndrome

A special place in the epidemiology of stachybotryotoxicosis is occupied by the so-called sick building syndrome. This phenomenon is directly related to the ability of the fungus Stachybotrys alternans to colonize structural elements and materials indoors.

The mechanism of syndrome development consists in the continuous inhalation intake of the pathogen. Individuals spending a long time in such fungus-infested premises regularly inhale microscopic spores and volatile toxins released by the microorganism colonies. This leads to chronic intoxication and the formation of an unfavorable living environment, requiring serious sanitary and epidemiological measures.

How to memorize

Mnemonic association: "STACHybotryotoxicosis — BUILDING and HORSES' FEAR". The fungus lives in BUILDing structures (sick building syndrome) and causes severe lesions (FEAR) in horses.

Class and exam questions

Which microorganism is the causative agent of stachybotryotoxicosis?

The disease is caused by the toxigenic mold fungus Stachybotrys alternans.

For which animals does the disease pose the greatest threat?

The main risk group consists of horses, in which alimentary infection leads to a severe form of toxicosis. Cattle and poultry are affected less frequently.

What is sick building syndrome in the context of this topic?

This is a pathological condition occurring in humans due to the presence of the fungus in building structures. People staying indoors constantly inhale spores and toxins.

How does contact infection manifest in humans?

Upon contact with contaminated agricultural feed, humans develop skin lesions in the form of dermatitis.
