Biological significance and connection with memory
Anticipatory reflection of reality is closely related to memory, which is a universal property of all living entities. For an organism to anticipate events, it must be able to retain information about past experience. The mechanism of memory is fundamentally identical in living entities across various levels of biological organization and is inextricably linked to the functioning of the universal genetic apparatus.
Memory performs three key functions, without which anticipatory reflection would be impossible:
- Fixation of molecular changes caused by a particular external stimulus.
- Long-term storage of the left-over traces of irritation.
- Reproduction of accumulated information at the required moment.
The manifestations of memory and the formation of traces are most clearly observed upon repeated action of a stimulus. However, the organism is also capable of remembering single strong exposures. First and foremost, this concerns those stimuli that elicit powerful emotional reactions. This ability to fixate traces of stimuli makes prediction possible and is closely related to the signaling significance of conditioned stimuli (a concept discovered by I.P. Pavlov).
Molecular mechanism: chemical continuum
The essence of the anticipatory reflection process is that with repeatedly repeating environmental impacts, specific molecular changes occur within the organism. Each environmental impact leaves its specific «trace» in the organism. Over time, these initially isolated traces unite into a single system.
A key concept in understanding this mechanism is the chemical continuum. This is a continuous chain of closely interrelated chemical reactions that gradually forms in response to a stereotyped, constantly repeating sequence of external stimuli.
The algorithm for implementing this mechanism is as follows:
- The very first external stimulus from the familiar series acts on the organism.
- Thanks to the already formed chemical continuum, a rapid and automatic triggering of the entire sequential chain of internal molecular changes occurs.
- Result: molecular changes inside the organism begin to outpace subsequent external stimuli. The internal environment prepares for an event even before it actually occurs.
Stages of anticipatory reflection formation
The development of this property occurs strictly sequentially. Three main stages of formation are traditionally distinguished, demonstrating the transition from passive response to active prediction.
Stage A: Primary impact Certain events occur sequentially in the external environment (let us designate them as stimuli I → II → III → IV). Each of these external events elicits its own isolated internal reaction in the organism (I causes process 1, II causes process 2, and so on). At this stage, internal connections between processes are completely absent. The organism's reaction strictly and passively follows the stimulus.
Stage B: Consolidation of connections The condition for transitioning to this stage is repeatedly repeating impacts. When the same sequence of external events (I–IV) repeats over and over, stable interrelations begin to form between the internal molecular processes (1, 2, 3, 4). An integral «trace» of the entire sequence of reactions physically forms within the organism.
Stage C: Anticipatory reflection (Result) The formation of the system is complete. Now, only the first external stimulus (I) acts on the organism. In response to it, the entire chain of internal processes (1 → 2 → 3 → 4) is automatically triggered. The main characteristic of this stage: internal changes (2, 3, 4) occur before the onset of the corresponding external events (II, III, IV). The organism has prepared for future impacts in advance.
This is of colossal importance for medicine, as anticipatory reflection is a fundamental property of adaptation (and the basis of conditioned reflexes) that allows the organism to survive in a constantly changing environment.
Briefly: answers to topical questions
How is anticipatory reflection related to the formation of Pavlov's conditioned reflex?
Anticipatory reflection of reality is the physiological basis for the formation of conditioned reflexes and is closely linked to their signaling significance. When applied, a conditioned stimulus carries information about the properties of the upcoming reinforcing factor.
- Signaling function — a conditioned signal provides advance warning of the subsequent unconditioned reflex.
- Adaptive significance — the organism prepares for environmental changes even before they occur.
- Future-orientation — the reaction to a conditioned stimulus serves as an example of activity oriented toward an upcoming vital event.
What is the role of the action result acceptor in the concept of anticipatory reflection?
The action result acceptor acts as a mechanism of anticipation, prediction, and evaluation of the future result. The formation of this apparatus reflects the process of goal-setting and higher motivation in a living creature.
- Anticipation of properties — living creatures are capable of anticipating the properties of the required result; dynamic behavioral programming relies on the enhanced apparatus of the action result acceptor, enabling the prediction of the properties of the needed result and the methods to achieve it.
- Model formation — in conditioned reflex experiments, anticipatory excitations were identified as a model of the expected result; when the acceptor's prediction discrepancy with reality occurred, an orienting-investigatory reaction was triggered.
- Programming — dynamic behavioral programming provides the ability to program a result for the distant future.
Imagine the principle of falling dominoes: when the tiles are lined up in a row (stereotyped events), it is enough to push just the first one for the entire row to fall automatically. The organism sees the fall of the first tile and triggers reactions to all subsequent ones without waiting for them to actually fall.
Class and exam questions
Who described the concept of anticipatory reflection of reality?
This fundamental property of living objects was investigated and described by the Soviet physiologist P.K. Anokhin.
What is the chemical continuum?
This is a continuous chain of interconnected chemical reactions formed in the body in response to a stereotyped, constantly repeating sequence of external stimuli.
What conditions are necessary for the formation of anticipatory reflection?
The main condition is the repeated, periodically recurring exposure of the organism to the same sequence of external factors.
Can the organism memorize single external exposures?
Yes, single exposures can be memorized if they are very strong and provoke pronounced emotional reactions.
