Biosphere and noosphere

The study of hygiene is inextricably linked with understanding the historical path of this science in our country. Russian hygiene has travelled a complex path from the empirical skills of Kievan Rus to a streamlined system of preventive medicine based on advanced scientific and social concepts.

Origins of sanitary culture: from Slavs to Lomonosov

Historical evidence unequivocally confirms that ancient Slavs possessed well-developed personal hygiene skills. In the era of Kievan Rus, public baths became extremely widespread, which indicates a high level of everyday culture. In the 11th and 12th centuries, cities such as Novgorod and Pskov boasted a level of municipal improvement that significantly surpassed many European settlements of that period. Water supply systems functioned on the streets of these cities, wooden pavements were laid, and the streets themselves were paved with stone.

The development of sanitary and hygienic thought was interrupted by the Mongol-Tatars. This three-hundred-year rule dealt a catastrophic blow to science, productive forces, and hygiene in general. Only after liberation in the late 14th century was the country able to resume the accumulation and development of hygienic knowledge.

M.V. Lomonosov occupies a special place in the history of Russian culture and hygienic science. In his fundamental treatise "On the Propagation and Preservation of the Russian People", written in 1761, he raised the most acute socio-hygienic issues. This work detailed aspects of domestic hygiene and nutrition, which laid the foundation for further research in this field.

Formation of military hygiene and the priority of prevention (19th century)

The nineteenth century was marked by the institutionalization of hygiene. In 1806, a specialized course in hygiene was introduced for the first time at the Department of Physiology of the St. Petersburg Medico-Surgical Academy. The experience of the Patriotic War of 1812 gave a huge impetus to the development of military hygiene. Soon, the first specialized manuals appeared, authored by M.Ya. Mudrov (1826) and R.S. Chetyrkin (1834).

During this period, leading Russian clinicians began actively promoting the priority of prevention (so-called prophylactic medicine):

  • N.I. Pirogov stated that the true progress of science lies precisely in hygiene, and emphasized that "the future belongs to prophylactic medicine."
  • M.Ya. Mudrov focused attention on the fact that a disease is much easier to prevent than to treat later.
  • S.P. Botkin called the prevention of diseases "the primary task of medical workers."
  • G.A. Zakharin argued that only hygiene is capable of "victoriously contending with the ailments of the masses."

These advanced ideas found broad support not only in the medical community, but also among prominent writers and public figures of that time.

Founders of independent hygienic science

The transformation of hygiene into an independent scientific discipline is associated with the names of two outstanding scientists: A.P. Dobroslavin and F.F. Erisman. They laid the foundations specific to the Russian school: its pronounced public character, the closest connection with practical sanitary activities, and a departure from the narrow sanitary-technical approach that dominated Western European schools.

Alexey Petrovich Dobroslavin (1842–1889) became the founder of the experimental direction. In 1871, he headed Russia's first department of hygiene at the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy. Dobroslavin established a special hygiene laboratory, actively developed sanitary expertise, and wrote basic textbooks ("Course of Military Hygiene", "Hygiene, a Course of Public Health"). In addition, he founded the journal "Zdorove" (Health), organized the Russian Society for Public Health Protection, and fiercely advocated for women's medical education.

Fyodor Fyodorovich (Goldreich Friedrich) Erisman (1842–1915), Swiss by birth and an ophthalmologist by initial specialty, moved to Russia in 1869. In 1882, he headed the department of hygiene at Moscow University. Erisman authored original works on school hygiene, occupational health, and nutrition. In 1892, he organized the Moscow Hygiene Society. Erisman's most important concept was that every physician is obligated to acquire a "hygienic way of thinking". Due to his opposition views, he was forced to leave the country in 1896.

Development of Soviet social and specialized hygiene

Following the events of 1917, against the background of a severe epidemic situation and the consequences of World War I, an urgent need arose to reorganize healthcare. Already on October 26, 1917, the medical and sanitary department was established, and in July 1918, the People's Commissariat of Health (Narkomzdrav) was founded. The first People's Commissar N.A. Semashko and his deputy Z.P. Solovyov developed the theoretical foundations of social hygiene. The prophylactic approach became the main and officially proclaimed principle of Soviet healthcare.

A significant contribution to science in the first third of the 20th century was made by Erisman's student — G.V. Khlopin, who headed departments in Tartu, Odessa, and St. Petersburg. His successor was Professor V.A. Uglov, who led departments at the Military Medical Academy and the 1st Leningrad Medical Institute, and authored works on military, municipal, and nutritional hygiene.

Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences A.A. Minkh (1904–1984) deserves special attention. Being a student of Uglov, he headed the department at the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute for almost 40 years without interruption. A.A. Minkh published the fundamental manual "Methods of Hygienic Research", wrote the first specialized textbook on general hygiene for dental students, and scientifically substantiated preventive measures for oral health (including water fluoridation issues). His research also covered air ionization, school, sports, municipal, and nutritional hygiene. During the Soviet period, Russian hygiene developed exceptionally fruitfully.

Briefly: answers to topical questions

What is the noosphere and what are its main differences from the biosphere?

The noosphere is the sphere of reason, the transition to which implies rational management of natural processes.

CharacteristicBiosphereNoosphere
DefinitionThe Earth's envelope created and transformed by living organismsSphere of reason
Interaction with the environmentIn the biosphere, living organisms interact with inorganic componentsMan actively transforms the surrounding world using technical means
Management of natural processesThe biosphere is a complex multi-level system, the stability of which is ensured by the coordinated functioning of all elementsRational management of natural processes is implied

What components are included in the structure of the biosphere according to V.I. Vernadsky?

According to V.I. Vernadsky, the structure of the biosphere (bios — life, sphera — globe) includes living matter and ecosystems.

  • Living matter is the totality of all living organisms, acting as the basis of the doctrine of the biosphere and influencing the inorganic environment.
  • Ecosystems are the elementary structural and functional units of the biosphere.

The biosphere is a complex multi-level system whose modern appearance is formed by the interaction of organisms with inorganic components.

What role does human activity play in the evolution of the biosphere?

Human activity exerts enormous anthropogenic pressure (anthropos — human, genesis — origin) and plays a destructive role in the evolution of the biosphere.

  • Opening of natural cycles — extraction of elements from the lithosphere and acceleration of the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles.
  • Environmental pollution — chemical, physical, and biological impact.
  • Destruction of ecosystems — soil degradation, deforestation, and drainage of swamps.
  • Decrease in biodiversity — extermination of species.

Man actively transforms the world with technical means, disrupting equilibrium and the cycling of substances.

How to memorize

To remember the founders of independent hygiene: "Two Es" — Erisman (in Moscow, "hygienic way of thinking") and Dobroslavin (in St. Petersburg, first department and laboratory).

Class and exam questions

What is the core of F.F. Erisman's concept?

Erisman believed that every physician, regardless of narrow specialization, is obligated to master the "hygienic way of thinking." This became the basis for including general hygiene in the mandatory training curriculum for all doctors.

Who headed the first Department of Hygiene in Russia?

The first Department of Hygiene in 1871 at the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy was headed by A.P. Dobroslavin.

What is the main principle of Soviet healthcare proclaimed after 1917?

The preventive approach was recognized as the main and officially established principle of Soviet healthcare.
