Tetracycline prescription in Latin

Doxycyclinum

Drugs of the tetracycline group belong to the class of antibiotics. As a classic example for prescribing in Latin, doxycycline is often used, which is prescribed in various dosage forms: tablets, capsules, and parenteral solutions.

Prescribing the tablet form

When writing a prescription for a tablet form of a drug from the tetracycline group, the rules of Latin grammar must be strictly observed. As an example, we use doxycycline.

  • Rp.: Doxycyclini 0,1
  • D.t.d. N 10 in tabul.
  • S. Take 1 tablet 2 times a day after meals.

The prescription begins with the physician's standard address to the pharmacist — Recipe (abbreviated as Rp.:), which translates as "Take". This is followed by the name of the active substance. In Latin, it must be put in the genitive case. Thus, the name Doxycyclinum transforms into Doxycyclini. Immediately after the name, the single dose of the drug is indicated — 0.1 grams.

The next line of the prescription is an instruction to the pharmacist to dispense a specific number of doses. The phrase Da tales doses numero 10 in tabulettis (abbreviated as D.t.d. N 10 in tabul.) means "Dispense such doses in the amount of 10 in tablets".

The prescription ends with the signature — Signa (abbreviated as S.). This is the instruction for the patient. For doxycycline tablets, it reads as follows: "Take 1 tablet 2 times a day after meals." Indicating administration specifically after meals is an important condition for this group of antibiotics.

Drafting a prescription for capsules

An alternative oral dosage form of doxycycline is capsules. Drafting a prescription for capsules has its own structural features compared to tablets.

  • Rp.: Caps. Doxycyclini 0,1 N 10
  • D.S. Take 1 capsule 2 times a day after meals.

In the subscription line, the name of the dosage form is placed first. We write Capsulas or the abbreviated Caps., after which the name of the antibiotic is again indicated in the genitive case — Doxycyclini. The single dose remains unchanged and amounts to 0.1 gram.

An important difference is that the total number of capsules (10 in this example) is indicated immediately in the first line after the dosage: N 10.

Since the dosage form and quantity are already defined, the second line of the prescription is significantly simplified. Instead of a detailed instruction on dispensing doses, the combined abbreviation D.S. is used, which stands for Da. Signa. ("Dispense. Label."). The instruction for use in the signature is similar to the tablet form: the patient is prescribed to take 1 capsule 2 times a day after meals.

Parenteral administration (ampoules)

For the treatment of conditions requiring parenteral administration of an antibiotic, drugs of the tetracycline group are prescribed as injections. In this case, a solution for intravenous use is prescribed.

  • Rp.: Sol. Doxycyclini 0,1/5 ml
  • D.t.d. N 5 in ampull.
  • S. For intravenous administration as directed by a physician.

The prescription begins by indicating the dosage form — solution. In Latin, this is Solutio, with the abbreviation Sol. used in the prescription. This is followed by the name of the drug in the genitive case — Doxycyclini.

Special attention should be paid to recording the dosage of the liquid form. It is prescribed as a fraction: 0,1/5 ml. This means that 0.1 grams of the active substance is contained in five milliliters of the solution.

In the next line, the physician instructs to dispense the drug in ampoules: Da tales doses numero 5 in ampullis (abbreviated as D.t.d. N 5 in ampull.). In this example, 5 ampoules are prescribed. The signature (S.) for the parenteral form is fundamentally different from the oral forms. The instruction strictly states: "For intravenous administration as directed by a physician."

Important aspects of tetracycline pharmacology

Writing a prescription is only the practical part of working with the drug. For a full understanding of the topic, the student needs to thoroughly study the theoretical base concerning antibiotics.

  1. First of all, one should review the general definition of antibiotics as a pharmacological group.
  2. A key aspect of successful therapy is knowing the features of doxycycline pharmacokinetics.
  3. It is equally important to analyze in detail the side effects and contraindications to the use of tetracyclines. This group of drugs has strict limitations that a physician must remember when writing a prescription.
  4. To build a broad clinical outlook, it is useful to conduct a comparative analysis of various groups of antibacterial agents. For example, as an addition to the topic, the spectrum of action features of first-generation fluoroquinolones are often studied.
How to memorize

For quick memorization of doxycycline dosage forms, use the rule "TCA": Tablets, Capsules, Ampoules — three main delivery routes for tetracyclines.

Class and exam questions

In which case is the drug name written in a prescription?

The name of the active substance, such as Doxycyclinum, is always indicated in the genitive case (Genitivus) — Doxycyclini.

How to correctly indicate the dosage for an intravenous solution?

The prescription indicates the mass of the active substance and the total volume of the solvent as a fraction. For example: 0.1/5 ml.

When should oral forms of doxycycline be taken?

According to the standard prescription signature, tablets and capsules must be taken strictly after meals.
