Mechanism of Action and Composition

The drug belongs to combination muscarinic antagonists. Its base consists of camphorate salts of scopolamine and hyoscyamine. The antimuscarinic effect of the drug is both central and peripheral in nature. An important role in the composition belongs to camphor: it exerts a tonic effect on the respiratory center, purposefully compensating for the potential respiratory depression caused by scopolamine.

Pharmacological effects

Due to the blockade of cholinergic receptors, the drug effectively suppresses the activity of the vomiting center and vestibular reflexes. Scopolamine also has a pronounced sedative effect, reduces salivary and bronchial gland secretion, and prevents reflex bradycardia. The duration of action of the tablet form is approximately 6 hours.

Indications for use

Clinical use of the drug focuses on neurological and vestibular disorders:

  • Prevention and treatment of motion sickness (seasickness and airsickness) — for the prevention of nausea and vomiting.
  • Relief of sudden attacks of vertigo (e.g., in Meniere's disease).

Side effects and contraindications

The safety profile of the drug is determined by its atropine-like properties:

  • Side effects: dry mouth and severe thirst typical of anticholinergics.
  • Contraindications: an absolute contraindication is glaucoma, as the blockade of muscarinic receptors leads to a dangerous increase in intraocular pressure.

Administration and Dosage

The drug is available in tablet form. Dosing regimen for motion sickness prophylaxis:

  • Take orally 30–60 minutes before departure, 1–2 tablets.
  • If necessary, another 1 tablet can be taken after 6 hours.
  • Maximum doses (MD): the maximum single dose (MSD) is 2 tablets, and the maximum daily dose (MDD) is 4 tablets.

Class and exam questions

What is the role of camphor in "Aeron" tablets?

Camphor exerts a tonic effect on the respiratory center, compensating for the respiratory depression caused by scopolamine.

Why is glaucoma an absolute contraindication to prescribing Aeron?

Due to its pronounced antimuscarinic action, the drug causes mydriasis and impaired outflow of aqueous humor, leading to a sharp increase in intraocular pressure.

What are the maximum doses (MD) of the drug for motion sickness?

The maximum single dose (MSD) is 2 tablets, and the maximum daily dose (MDD) is 4 tablets.
